Core: Focus

Focus is an important ability of all characters in Monomyth that allows them to activate powerful abilities or improve their chances of favorable effects when rolling.

Each character in Monomyth has a set Focus Pool. Every time a character uses Focus, they subtract one point from that pool.

Rolling

Almost any roll in Monomyth can be performed with Focus. A character making a roll can choose to spend any number of their remaining Focus points in order to affect their roll. For each point of Focus spent, the character gains a +5 to their roll.

Ability Activation

Some abilities may require that a character spends Focus in order to activate them. When this happens, the character subtracts the number of Focus points required for the activation from their Focus Pool. If a character does not have enough Focus points in their pool to activate the ability, they are unable to use it.

Focus points spent on activating Abilities do not get added to any rolls when using that ability (unless stated otherwise).

Bonus Focus

Bonus Focus can be granted by effects or abilities. When granted, Bonus Focus gives an automatic bonus to rolls as if a character had spent that many focus points when activating the ability.

Bonus Focus does not count toward your overall Focus Pool and can allow you to exceed your maximum Focus when it is used.

Bonus Focus can only be used for rolling, can not be used to activate abilities, and only lasts for the turn in which it was granted.

Penalty

Some effects or abilities may cause their target(s) to be inflicted with a Penalty. When a character rolls with Penalty, they do so with a -5 for each point of Penalty added. Focus can be used to negate this Penalty at a ratio of 1:1.
